Dang Thi Huyen is still a strange name in the Vietnamese Jiu-Jitsu community. At the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship in 2021, Huyen excelled and shined as the athlete who brought home the most medals for the country; she achieved a total of 4/7 medals of The Vietnamese sports delegation, including a gold medal in the Jiu-Jitsu fighting content. With this outstanding achievement, Huyen has been practicing Jiu-Jitsu for a long time, but she has only practiced Jiu-Jitsu for two years.
Let's discover " Why the 20-year-old girl who just came into contact with Jiu-Jitsu succeeded in all four competitions she participated in!'
1. Hi Huyen, Can you introduce yourself to everyone?
Hello everyone, my name is Dang Thi Huyen. I'm 20 years old. Currently, I am training and competing for the Thai Nguyen Provincial Sports Team. I have been practicing Jiu-Jitsu for two years.
2. It's only been two years of practice, and this is also the first international competition, but it has already achieved excellent results. How did you prepare for the tournament?
I think the achievements I have gained from this tournament must thank the coaches: Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang, Mr. Phan Thanh Dinh, Mr. Nguyen Vinh Quang, and Mr. Vu Nguyen Hoang Tho. The coaches cared for other athletes and me during the training, eating, and martial arts uniform.
In practice, I followed the schedule set by the coaches. 2 months before the Jiu-Jitsu Championship, my teammates and I went to the training center together. I regularly train for four shifts/day from Monday to Sunday. Each change lasted an hour and a half. Alternating it is a few stretching sessions per week to relax the muscles. Such training helps me increase both endurance and technique during competition.
Besides preparing physically, choosing a martial arts uniform is also an equally important thing when I have to compete with Gi. A well-fitted Gi will not hinder movement and greatly assist in competition. After trying many martial arts uniforms of different brands, Coach Nguyen Vinh Quang and I finally chose to wear TheGis martial arts uniform.
3. Is there anything special about TheGis martial arts uniform that makes you choose to use it for the first international tournament?
Not only in this tournament, but TheGis is also a daily practice uniform in daily practice. My impression when wearing Gi Jiu-Jitsu TheGis is the fit. Because of that, it will help her be more relaxed in her movements, so the opponent will have less chance to grasp Gi, making it difficult to cause harm to me during the competition.
This martial arts suit is made in Vietnam by the Vietnamese. I wanted to support the ' local brand ' even more.
I didn't have much difficulty in training because I was used to the time preparing for wrestling competitions for Thai Nguyen province. Sometimes it will be tiring and pressuring. I always have coaches and teammates cheering and encouraging me, so I quickly overcome it.
5. Huyen previously had a Wrestling episode. What are the advantages and disadvantages of starting from Wrestling to Jiu-Jitsu?
For Wrestling, she will fight to stand with the target of falling (the opponent), while Jiu-Jitsu will be more about lying down with skills like cracking or tightening joints on the mat. At first, I was a bit unfamiliar. But I know that Jiu-Jitsu and Wrestling will complement each other a lot, so I try to practice. In the first competition in Jiu-Jitsu fighting, I applied the skills I learned in both Wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu, and luckily I won the first gold medal.
Maybe it's time to check the martial arts uniform. Unlike the domestic competition, the martial arts uniform of athletes in the international tournament must be checked very carefully.
The organizers will measure the length of the arms/legs and the collars of the sleeves/legs to see if they meet the standards. I was also worried because it was the first time I had to check about this problem. But the TheGis uniform fits me perfectly. Thus, TheGis became my competition uniform in the last international tournament.
7. Huyen mentioned a lot about martial arts. Do you have any tips for people to choose better martial arts in practice?
I followed the coach's advice to choose a suitable and qualified martial arts uniform when competing. Also, when buying a martial arts suit, you always try it first to see if it's too tight or loose. And if you don't know the international competition standards, TheGis will help you choose the perfect one.
8. Finally, Do you have any plans for the future?
After this competition, my plan is still to continue to learn, practice, compete and dedicate myself to the country's sports in general and Thai Nguyen province in particular.
Thank you for sharing, Huyen! TheGis wish you success in your future and bring many achievements for Viet Nam.
