About TheGis

Jess Khan was wearing TheGis

Many years later, while sitting in front of my Rashguard blueprint, I still remember that old afternoon, the afternoon when the TV showed martial arts movies. The room at that time was located in the corner of a newly built house, surrounded by books, plastic toy cars, a few cartons of electronics and miscellaneous clothes. My world at that time was still babbling among A to Z, at which I needed to use my finger to point at each one. At 5 o'clock every afternoon, the whole family gathered around the TV in the middle of the room, and then the sounds and images emanating from that TV seemed to pull me into a whole new dimension. Ever since that moment, I have known that Martial Arts has always been a huge part of my life. As a child I studied Aikido, Judo, and Taekwondo so when I first saw Brazilian Jiu-jitsu I was immediately hooked. Like many, I didn’t understand how someone could be strangled by their own Gi. My curiosities lead me to purchase one. My first Gi was a Judo Gi because BJJ was not as popular in Vietnam…

THE START

The Gi’s Shop was founded in 2014 due to the lack of accessible BJJ Gi’s in Vietnam. From my perspective, this would cause turmoil in our small growing BJJ community so I took initiative. I was fortunate in that my family owns a clothing company so that was a great place to start my new project, of designing and creating my own BJJ Gi’s.

THE DIFFERENCES

Initially, TheGis' customers were mostly U.S. and Europeans, because this was the main group practicing Jiujitsu at that time, the difference of TheGis was in the sewing and fabric handling techniques that met export standards.

I searched through fabric markets across the city and also our own warehouse and found fabric that was used to make Judo Gi’s. I bought Judo Gi’s and began designing my first Gi’s from the Judo Gi. It wasn’t until my first BJJ coach showed me a proper BJJ Gi that I was able to understand the differences between Gi’s. Over time, when accessing new fabric sources from East Asia, Japan and the US, TheGis was able to make more martial arts costumes for a variety of purposes. Like the travel Gi set is suitable for travel because the fabric is light, easy to fold, does not clog the suitcase and dries quickly. The traditional Gi set has been upgraded to increase durability, diversify sizes for Vietnamese people while still meeting IBJJF standards, and the training gi which price is accessible for beginners to try Jiu-Jitsu.

Regardless of the present or the future, TheGis differentiators are always focused on helping the wearer stay motivated and passionate on the Jiu Jitsu journey.

GUARANTEE

My team and I have failed many times before being able to reach the quality and craftsmanship level of our Gi’s today. We not only aim to spread our quality of Gi’s to the world but also show our love for the Subtle Art of Lethal Gentility.
